Why "Agafay"?

Agafay Books takes its name from the Agafay Desert, near Marrakech: a vast, open landscape, like a child’s imagination. Each of our books is a journey that invites young readers to discover new ideas, embrace their cultural identity and stay curious about the world around them.

Our Mission

Empowering Children Through Cultural Pride and Curiosity

OUR VISION

Nurturing Global Citizens Rooted in Heritage

Our Core Values

Cultivating Cultural Pride and Curiosity in the Next Generation

Our Vision:

We envision a world where children grow up confident in their cultural identity while embracing diverse global perspectives. By celebrating our heritage, we empower young readers to think critically, solve problems creatively, and act responsibly in their communities. Our stories inspire children to connect deeply with their roots while preparing them to thrive in an interconnected world.

Our Mission:

At Agafay Books, we help children develop a strong sense of Moroccan identity by celebrating the nation’s rich Afro-Amazigh and Arab heritage while fostering connections to the wider world. Through engaging stories, we inspire cultural pride and nurture curiosity, helping children develop self-awareness, empathy, and a sense of belonging. We equip young readers with emotional intelligence and critical thinking skills to navigate the modern world with confidence, compassion, and a deep understanding of their heritage.

Our Core Values:

Cultural Identity and Multilingual Excellence

We honour Morocco’s cultural richness, with its Amazigh, Arab and African roots. Our books are published in French, Arabic and English, and in Tamazight where possible, so that readers stay close to their heritage and can speak with the wider world. They are also bridges between generations, giving children and their families a reason to talk about who they are and where they come from.

Curiosity and creativity

We nurture imagination and critical thinking by inviting readers into art, mathematics, nature and history. Our stories help readers adapt to a changing world with confidence, while respecting the traditions and the living world around them.

Emotional intelligence

We help readers recognise and name their emotions, and understand those of others. Through stories that feel true, we encourage empathy, self-reflection and a sense of responsibility towards others.

our story

Who We Are

Born from an observation. Agafay Books began with a simple, urgent question: where are Moroccan children in the books they read?

A mirror that shows nothing. For too long, a Moroccan child has opened a book hoping to be met, only to find a mirror that reflects nothing back. To belong to the story, she must first imagine herself as someone else.

More than representation. This is not just a question of diversity on a shelf. It is a question of what a child learns to believe about herself and about the world she inhabits.

Our answer. We are a Moroccan publishing house, based in Marrakech, publishing illustrated books rooted in Morocco, its art, its nature, its languages and its imagination, so that every child can open a book and find a world that feels like home.

What We Do

We publish for Morocco. We create books rooted in Moroccan landscapes, characters and stories, told in their own voice.

We write for the child who rarely finds herself in a book. Our books are for the young reader searching for a face like hers, a street like hers, a story that tells her: you were always worth a story.

We carry the stories that were already there. Morocco overflows with extraordinary stories, carried in grandmothers’ voices and in the streets of its medinas. We put them on the page.

We open doors. Through five collections, we invite readers into Moroccan art, mathematics, Amazigh tales, emotions and nature.

What Matters to Us

Pleasure over obligation. Children grow up associating books with school and exams. We believe reading should feel like pleasure and belonging, never like being asked to become someone else.

Culture told from within. We do not borrow, import or soften. We believe Moroccan culture is rich enough, and alive enough, to be told in its own voice, in French, Arabic, English and Tamazight.

The long view. A child who finds herself in a book does not just read a story. A generation of readers who see themselves clearly does not just dream of a different future. It builds one.
